Slashdot
Software for the Realtime 3D Modeler?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/18/0240212

[0]Milo_Mindbender asks: "I've been involved in doing a number of games
and other realtime 3d apps and I always run into the same problem: the
3d modelers that most artists use (MAX, Maya, Softimage,
Lightwave...etc) are all heavily biased towards doing non-realtime
rendering using raytracing or some other technique. While they can be
used to make models for realtime 3D hardware, a very large number of
their features don't map well onto realtime 3D hardware. For example
many of the procedural shaders used by these packages map very poorly
to a hardware shader's abilities, and similarly, if you want to use a
hardware shader on some polygons, most modelers give you no way to see
    the effect while modeling."

Volvo's "Safety Car" Runs Windows 98
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/17/2322220

An anonymous submitter writes "[0]MSNBC is carrying a report on Volvo's
new "[1]Safety Car." It sounds pretty cool, too, until you get to the
part that mentions it runs Windows 98 as its operating system. Yikes!
Be sure to reboot your car frequently to avoid crashes."

Video Game Advertising Reaches New Lows
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/17/2141244

Anonymous Coward writes "[0]The Guardian is reporting that Acclaim is
attempting to [1]purchase advertising space on gravestones of the
recently departed in order to promote its new game ShadowMan 2. This
certainly takes the encroachment of commercial messages on public space
to new levels." I understand RockStar is looking for a molotov cocktail
    partner...

for each game will be held on the IMAX Dome screen, so if you've ever

Next Generation Regexp
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/17/2017255

[0]prostoalex writes "Jeffrey E. F. Friedl, author of newly published
2nd edition of Mastering Regular Expressions, wrote a feature article
for O'Reilly Network on the recent [1]innovations in the regular
expression world. You'd think that such area as regular expressions
would be fairly stable, but according to the author, 'when I started to
work on the second edition of Mastering Regular Expressions and started
refocusing on the field, I was rather shocked to find out how much had
really changed'. The article's behind-the-scene purpose is apparently
to push a new book that O'Reilly published this month, but it has great
educational value for anyone involved with practical extracting and
    reporting."

MIT Technology Review on Where Orwell Went Wrong
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/17/1837211

nakhla writes "[0]MIT's Technology Review is running an interesting
article entitled [1]Who's Afraid of 1984? The article talks about
Orwell's famous work, and examines how Orwell's view of technology's
impact on freedom and democracy was flawed. The article points out
that, in fact, freedom and democracy were strengthened by technological
innovations, and addresses its affect on Stalinism and Nazism. An
interestng read for those who are worried about technology's impact on
    our generation and beyond."

Clockless Computing
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/17/1812233

[0]ender81b writes "Scientific American is carrying a nice article on
[1]asynchronous chips. In general, the article advocates that
eventually all computer systems will have to move to an asynchronous
design. The article focuses on Sun's [2]efforts but gives a nice
overview of the general concept of asynchronous chip design." We had

Broadcasters Appeal Royalty Ruling
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/17/1739243

tanveer1979 pointed out this story, but his summary of it wasn't much
good. :) According to [0]Reuters and [1]Kurthanson.com, broadcasters
(regular radio stations, not webcasters) are appealing a year-old
ruling which would require them to make the same royalty payments for
webcasting that webcast-only stations have to make. They're arguing
that Congress intended the royalty payments to apply only to internet
services which allow one to pick what music one receives - if the
listener is force-fed a stream, like regular radio, Congress didn't
intend for the royalty payments to apply.

Talk to a Movie Digital SFX Expert
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/16/206221

Thad Beier has been working with computer graphics and film since the
late 70s. In 1995 he and three partners founded [0]Hammerhead
Productions, a company that specializes in computer-generated special
effects. Thad received a Technical Achievement Award from the Academy
of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the [1]Oscar people, not the
[2]MPAA) in 1998 for one of his many technical innovations. He's worked
on Terminator 2, Angels in the Outfield, The Fast and The Furious, and
the upcoming Blue Crush, among other films. He wrote [3]this 1992
Siggraph paper, and now writes all of Hammerhead's software tools and
manages the company's mixed bag of SGI and Linux equipment. So ask Thad
anything you want about computer-generated special effects. We'll send
him 10 of the highest-moderated questions, and post his answers when we
    get them back.

My favorite tool will always be my trusty old Swiss Army knife. It's
great because it has got everything you might need from a nail file to
a pair of scissors. Personally, I think we need something like that for
the corporate world. You know, something that can handle those
overflowing inboxes. We need more then just a simple e-mail filtering
    program.
