While they can be used to make models for realtime 3D hardware, a very large number of their features don't map well onto realtime 3D hardware. For example many of the procedural shaders used by these packages map very poorly to a hardware shader's abilities, and similarly, if you want to use a hardware shader on some polygons, most modelers give you no way to see the effect while modeling." It sounds pretty cool, too, until you get to the part that mentions it runs Windows 98 as its operating system. Yikes! Be sure to reboot your car frequently to avoid crashes." This certainly takes the encroachment of commercial messages on public space to new levels." I understand RockStar is looking for a molotov cocktail partner... F. Friedl, author of newly published 2nd edition of Mastering Regular Expressions, wrote a feature article for O'Reilly Network on the recent [1]innovations in the regular expression world. You'd think that such area as regular expressions would be fairly stable, but according to the author, 'when I started to work on the second edition of Mastering Regular Expressions and started refocusing on the field, I was rather shocked to find out how much had really changed'. The article's behind-the-scene purpose is apparently to push a new book that O'Reilly published this month, but it has great educational value for anyone involved with practical extracting and reporting." The article talks about Orwell's famous work, and examines how Orwell's view of technology's impact on freedom and democracy was flawed. The article points out that, in fact, freedom and democracy were strengthened by technological innovations, and addresses its affect on Stalinism and Nazism. An interestng read for those who are worried about technology's impact on our generation and beyond." In general, the article advocates that eventually all computer systems will have to move to an asynchronous design. The article focuses on Sun's [2]efforts but gives a nice overview of the general concept of asynchronous chip design." We had another story about this [3]last year. They're arguing that Congress intended the royalty payments to apply only to internet services which allow one to pick what music one receives - if the listener is force-fed a stream, like regular radio, Congress didn't intend for the royalty payments to apply. In 1995 he and three partners founded [0]Hammerhead Productions, a company that specializes in computer-generated special effects. Thad received a Technical Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the [1]Oscar people, not the [2]MPAA) in 1998 for one of his many technical innovations. He's worked on Terminator 2, Angels in the Outfield, The Fast and The Furious, and the upcoming Blue Crush, among other films. He wrote [3]this 1992 Siggraph paper, and now writes all of Hammerhead's software tools and manages the company's mixed bag of SGI and Linux equipment. So ask Thad anything you want about computer-generated special effects. We'll send him 10 of the highest-moderated questions, and post his answers when we get them back. It's great because it has got everything you might need from a nail file to a pair of scissors. Personally, I think we need something like that for the corporate world. You know, something that can handle those overflowing inboxes. We need more then just a simple e-mail filtering program. ================================================== Copyright (c) 2002 OSDN.
