Actually I am already using 3.7 so the process could (might) be shorter :) 
I noticed the default 3.11 kernelconfig has a lot of timer, IRQ and other
things enabled, c.f. 3.7  Were you trying out some real time features?

Wouldn't one would need to enable those features in the older kernels, if
present, in order to determine when the timer problem first pops up?  If
that is the objective of the exercise.

I might try 3.7 in the 2013.09.0 release, just for fun some evening.
