Hi John,

The essence of a wiki is group editing.

Granted, but this does not mean that we cannot be civilized. If you feel the need to delete something, talk it over on the list first. Someone else might have an equally valid reason for keeping it on and, whenever possible, this wiki will support the open exploration, discovery and sharing of information in line with the very spirit of the open source movement. To this end, I take a wide view of open source: The wiki is not just a resource listing open source projects and supporting them but also an open source resource itself, with the tutorials, information, tips, tricks, hacks, etc. that already fill its pages and will hopefully continue to do so (all of which are released under a Creative Commons license.)

Recently there has been some talk about what belongs on the wiki and what doesn't. I was not able to partake fully in those discussions as I was busy launching a really neat RIA project with a great bunch of guys in the Netherlands so I will try and address some of the threads here.

If some of you want to start a project to move content from the Flashcoders wiki over -- and I believe we should ask for the blessing of Branden (Hall) at least before doing this -- then, by all means, do it. Why wouldn't we support that like any other open source project? The Flashcoders wiki was probably one of the largest open-source Flash resources available and I, for one, miss it. I cannot see how open source information, articles, tutorials, tips, tricks etc. do not belong on this wiki :)

Regarding the recent events, I can only say that it makes me very proud that the first thought some of the best minds in our community had was to share with us, on OSFlash, their excitement, discoveries and knowledge on what is perhaps going to be one of the most important new technologies in the Flash Platform.

I cannot imagine an OSFlash that isn't true to the essence of the open source movement -- the garden-shed curiosity, the open sharing of knowledge, the collaborative, random, instantaneous energy that is, at times, amazing to behold.

Bureaucracy, walls and organizational charts (sadly) have a place in this world. Fortunately, that place is not OSFlash. I don't believe that there is any issue, now or in the future, that we cannot resolve with rational discourse. I would like to see my role in this as that of an enabler and perhaps, a steward. Ultimately, OSFlash is about the community, owes its existence to the community and should grow and evolve in an organic manner under the influence of this amazing community which I personally feel very lucky to be a part of.

All the best,
Aral
