I agree that this is a needed piece to a good development environment, and
Nicolas thanks for posting the information that you have so far.

I did a little playing around with it today to see if I could hack my way into
what ports that it is using. Thanks to John Grden for spurring on some great
ideas about how this might be working.

I used a port scanner (TCPView)on my Windows XP machine to see what traffic was
going on while using Flash debugging. I also created a Flash socket client to
see if that could somehow connect. Here is what I found so far:

1. When starting up the Flash IDE, it makes a TCP connection to a different port
every time. This connection is maintained until the program is closed down. So
far, from my brief tests, the connections have never been below 2000 or above
4000.

2. When creating a SWF with the Flash IDE and setting it for remote debugging,
this generated SWF connects on a different port than the one that Flash is
listening on. This port seems to be consistently the same until you restart
Flash. Simply turning off Flash doesn't seem to change it.

3. Trying to listen for the event using a flash client to connect to a specific
port using XMLSocket doesn't seem to be able to contact the SWF that is in debug
mode.

So, it looks like the debugging information is being transferred via a TCP
connection and not LocalConnection, beyond that, I have no idea yet.

Please keep us posted on the findings as they come up.

I'm very excited about this. It's the one thing I really miss during AS
development.
