It sounds like what you are saying is that your vm might be more
appropriate as a projector like tool than as a browser plugin where
you have to assume that the plugin is there or that  the user will be
willing to download it. This sounds like a good and reasonable goal.

I am not belittling the power of open source. But creating a full
totally compatible player (which it would have to be) seems like an
almost impossible task, even if money was *infinite*. You would have
to get every nuance and every bug replicated in exactly the same way.

I see replacing the flash player as a common plugin with an open
source, or closed source effort by *anyone* as impossible. The reason
for this is that since the official flash player is already free, who
would want to replace it with an open source one that will have "bugs"
or "incompatibilities" for no clear client side benefit.
