Open Source Projects exist because of the need to
protect the public from loosing a software capability.
Protecting them from loosing alternatives.
We can go on with for hours that companies like
microsoft or macromedia will never go out, but life is
our reality and sh!!t happens. Let us not forget the
roots of the SWF(swiff). Anything can be replaced,
bought or shutdown as long as it has a price tag on
it.
Whether Macromedia likes it or not, same as how
whether Microsoft likes it or not, Open source is here
to stay. They may shutdown projects, eventually the
community will always find an answer.
OSFlash.org started a revolution in Rich Media
applications, for me MTASC was one of the major
firestarters. Yet there are more open source flash
projects out there, it would be nice to see all of
them united in one umbrella. What would also safeguard
this organization is a backing from the Linux distro
providers. Most distro's now normally provide an array
of supported opensource software, why not include
projects from OSFlash.org
Macromedia is powered with multitude of great software
engineers, and can easily surpass what the open source
community would work on. But for me they need the open
source community, as they are the most truthful
quality assurance any product would have.
Take IBM for example, donating tremendously in the
open source community most prominent of which is our
beloved Eclipse. Now they are releasing the Java
version of Lotus Notes called Lotusphere, which uses
the Eclipse platform as its base. They would not reach
such plugabble platform without the contributions of
the community.
If there is something not provided or lacking in a
macromedia's product. The community will find it and
make an answer for it. All macromedia has to do is
look.
