yeah I like that idea of a check file/rename connector swf etc - that's something that you could do now as a matter of fact.

As an alternative to removing the whole connector, it would of course be possible to just check for the existence of a "marker file" on the server, be it a swf, xml, or plain text file, which has to be loaded successfully before the connector is enabled.
