Many thanks for the two links. Nowadays people talk about RIAs and includes AJAX applications, but I that kind of apps really are not RIAs since don't have all features provide by the Flash Platform (video, audio, ...). For this reason a prefer to refer to AJAX apps as "pseudo-RIAs". RIAs is about the Flash Player mainly.

"RIA" can mean "Rich Internet Applications", with the original
definition summarized here:

normal browser _javascript_ can pull in new text without dumping the old
HTML/JS/CSS... the meaning of the term can change with the audience.
