Thank you Aral :) Your advices are very welcome! The application is to be run from a LAN environment, and was put online just for testing purposes. Anyway, normally it is working fast even in the Internet, so there must be something wrong happening. Maybe different behavior on Flash Player 9? I'll try to install it to check if it has something to do with it. Can you try it again, to see if after cached (I'm using PHPThumb) still remains slow? The application isn't fully translated, and in October, if there is interest from possible clients, I'll give the xml files to a translating company, to make sure that there won't be errors :).
