No question about it, mac is more expensive. For me personally, as a
non gamer (which is the only place where the video card will make a
difference) the mac actually gives me *better* graphics than the
windows machine. Its not just frames per second, but how its
integrated into the OS and the experience. The thing is that what you
are paying for is better software. And I know, we always have a hard
time paying for software. There's open source, which says all software
should be free, and p2p music services, which say music should be
free, but the truth is soft/digital goods take real engineering to
create and have real value to the customer.

For me, my Mac is *much* more productive in the areas where I can work
(unfortunately not flex builder until end of year without parallels).
But if you just add up all the physical parts and chips, do an
inventory and compare the relative values, you must choose Dell. But
the apple software integration is just "insanely good". What's that
worth to me? Well it was certainly worth giving up the high end
graphics processor and therefore 3d gaming since I dont game. But in
terms of useful graphics, looking at stuff like the new core animation
and time machine, and the way that the bundled apps work (garageband
is great) the software integration and design makes a difference to
me. My mac saves me time and makes me more productive because I do
things that I couldnt do, or I would just find difficult enough that I
would never do on my PC.

But if you dont value the software and design (and I dont mean the
power plug) and/or dont believe that there are sufficient productivity
benefits from better design, you should get a Dell. For me, once I
could run both windows and mac on one box it was a no brainer.

Regards,
Hank
