That's right. You'd either have to release the 'derivate work' under GPL too, or buy a commercial license from the authors. IANAL, of course, and even amongst lawyers i think there's dispute yet on how exactly to interpret the GPL in this regard (ie whether or not an application is 'derivate work' if it links in a GPLed library).
