The minimum is 2, since a movieclip (and also a DisplayObject) is maskable by its own children, too.

Although in general I'm satisfied with the present way of masking, I added a property to visual objects in my own class library that sets a rectangular mask (using a child object for masking the parent) and I think that a simple rectangular clipping region would be a nice thing.
