Hi all,

I am extremely impressed with papervision3d. I am new to Flash &
PV3D, I have a project in mind and would appreciate some input from
you 3D modeling experts to decide if it is worth pursuing.

First, I would like to build a Flash interface that allows one to
construct some basic 3D models using primitive shapes (easy step).
Then, I would like to export the 3D model in some format, and pipe it
into an external rendering program capable of producing a baked uv
rendering. Then, I would like to export a COLLADA file from that
program and load it back into my Flash application and load it again
with papervision3d. The user would then have the impression of
"automatic" generation of nice textured models with lighting and
shadows once they have arrived at a desired model.

Questions:

1. What is the best format to use for exporting the initial model of
primitive 3D shapes? I will probably be dealing initially with
cylinders, but may want to use nurbs in the future to get helical
shapes.

2. What application is best suited to perform the external rendering?
Clearly if this is going to be executed by clicking a button or two in
the Flash program, it needs to be a program that is capable of
command-line execution or that has a nice API for me to work with. I
looked into blender first since it's free, but it seems like you get
what you pay for. I may be able to purchase a real program, but would
need to be certain that I'm getting the right one.

3. (long shot) Has anyone done / thought about doing this? I would be
happy to collaborate with anyone who is interested, and I will
ultimately post all the source if/when I get anywhere on this.

Thanks,
Shawn
