Sounds like a very interesting idea, I wish I could be more help, all I can tell you is that an app called povray has been around a long time, and it's a free commandline-based renderer that takes in a text-based format. Not sure if it takes COLLADA directly or not, so you may also need a translator (if one doesn't already exist). At least this is something to look into, good luck.
