You can already read from an URL, just pass one into osgmovie and watch it :-)

I tried it actually, it seemed to read the movie correctly (i.e. the resolution and other stats printed to stdout are correct) but the quad was just black. So it would seem that it downloads the file and reads it, but doesn't display it correctly. I don't have time to check why that is right now though.

Yep, pinging the list for those who are already a bit more experience
with ffmpeg would make sense.

OK, it would be a start.

Might I suggest you have a look at taking apart the ffmpeg application
code to spot how it reads from webcam.

Here's one of the tutorials I came across, perhaps the command line
options used will provide some clues.
