It's a difficult balance to strike. Use of typedef's can certainly help backwards compatibility, using these for 3.0 would be helpful, but it's not always possible to get perfect mapping. My priority is making sure the OSG compiles and runs properly across platforms. Backwards compatibility and cleanness at this stage is nice to have but not a must have. If you can make the changes which will be low risk w.r.t compiling and running across platforms then go for it.
