I don't have a problem with there being two magic number variants if
there are two endian variants.  Of all the places we could put the
type of endian the file recorded as this would be the place I think as
it's already there.  We'd need to assume that existing files are
little endian which is probably the best assumption for most users.
Being able to override the endian might be appropriate for older
files.
