Hi All,

Before Siggraph we made an abortive attempt at converging towards 2.2.
Back then we discussed returning to getting 2.2 after Siggraph. Not
much has been said since about 2.2, but we have certainly fixed quite
a few bugs, and added a few new features and API refinements. Perhaps
the time is ripe for 2.2.

I've been rev'ing the developer release this month pretty regularly, a
number of them have had silly build errors or execution errors which
have mostly now been fixed, but as yet none have felt close to release
candidates. For 2.2 we want to make sure that it is solid both in
build and execution. Feature wise we needn't see many changes before
2.2, so its now mainly a case of getting it well tested across
platforms.

For testing I will need members of the community on all platforms to
step up and stress test the dev releases and SVN version. I don't
have a particular release shedule in mind, for this I'm happy to
listen to the community - I need you all to do testing and if you
aren't available yet then we'll need to consider this w.r.t timing.

My own preference would be a quick convergence to 2.2 and get is out
within the next week or two. Motivations for this are 1) users using
2.0 are hitting bugs that are already fixed 2) a protracted release
schedule just sucks time like nothing else - we all have better things
to do than go testing all the time.

Thoughts?
Robert.
