Hi all,

I fixed the problem.

So in case anyone is interested, it's not a problem with the new compiz 
fusion desktop effects on Ubuntu Gutsy. It's a problem with xserver-xgl. 
I removed that package, and everything worked beautifully, even with 
desktop effects enabled.
