Hi After some more testing, i found that there were some settings i was using that don't fit a connected particle system, such as having randomized particle speeds(so parts of the trail overshoot others). Now i have quite reasonable trails working by tweaking settings, but i haven't yet established the conditions that trigger the bug. I'm a bit busy these days, but i'll investigate and give more details when time allows.
