You wouldn't be able to install OSG on an older OS that would have cmake 2.4 without upgrading first to cmake 2.6 I think it's better to be as much compatible as possible with older libraries. Unless some new absolutely terrific feature is provided, but I can't think of any such thing from a support infrastructure as cmake. My 2 cents: OSG should support cmake 2.4.x as long as possible.
