Our use case unfortunately will require us to remove the previous level
geom. and page it back if require later for various reasons

The low-rest children are always kept around whilst the high res versions of
them remain actively used.

Once the high res children got out of view they will get removed after the
expiry delay and their OpenGL objects will be recycled.  The expiry happens
from high res levels down to low res levels.
