I've attached two images showing the recovery process in action.
Heh, pretty funny stuff :-) I had heard of that trick, though when one of my hard drives crashes the "slap trick" worked well enough to get my data off the drive before replacing it (slap the drive flat on a hard surface while unplugged). I was nervous about doing it but figured I had nothing to lose (probably similar to how you felt :-) ).
