Hi Henry, Terrapage database tend to built with very aggressive LOD range settings so that the tiles cull out even when you aren't that far away. The default position that the osgviewer places you at start up is placed far enough away to view the whole database, but alas if this is beyond the range of those aggressive LOD range then you want see your tiles till you zoom in closer.
With VirtualPlanetBuilder and osgEarth they both generated paged database that have proper fallback tiles that can seen even at far distances, and much better balanced for modern computers - whereas Terrpage databases tend to built for hardware with much lower capabilities and with overly aggressive LOD settings.
