I'm not used to these forum things so the format of my response will probably 
be odd, anyway...

In both cases I'm getting my the near/far from  
rttCamera->getProjectionMatrixAsFrustum.  The values returned in the the 
DO_NOT_COMPUTE case are 1.0 and 10000.0 and the linearised ranges seem to agree 
with this.  The camera field of view is not changing.  

I haven't looked at the actual values only their differences.  I had hoped that 
some of my assumptions were wrong, but following your response it seems that 
I'm going to have to do this the hard way and get some proper data.

Also, I discovered yesterday that I'm going to have to port the whole lot to 
Windows because of image processing dependencies.  This might take some time.

Hopefully I can eventually close this thread down with some answers rather than 
questions.
