Good point about a coordinator.

I wonder if the Creative Commons and the 'subscription' models can be combined: - individual contributions are made under CC (to encourage & fine- tune submissions) - the money gathered from interested parties / subscriptions can go to fund the editor effort (to have a coherent whole)

The fun part will be to figure out the overall license that the book will have, and how it can be published in the non-electronic format.
