Regarding this. I have seen this in the FAQ:
http://www.openscenegraph.org/osgwiki/pmwiki.php/FAQ/FAQ#faq_06

"Q. Where is the reference manual for the .osg language? I searched all the
project's "documentation" folders.
A: UseTheSourceLuke! There is no documentation yet for the scene description
language. "

Is this still true? Is there no intro to writing .osg ascii files? When looking
at a sample .osg file, I don't know which arguments are mandatory, which have
default values and what those defaults are, and so on...

It is still true, there isn't a .osg ascii introduction.   Pretty well every field in it is optional, and the defaults are simply the defaults of the underlying classes.  The keywords all map to the underlying get/set methods so if you have the headers/docs open on the class in question everything should hopefully start making sense.

Robert.
