Rick, I use the LWO object loader, but not the LWS loader. We use LWO2 as the preferred
3D object transfer format between our VNS/SX authoring tool and our OSG-based NatureView
realtime viewer. It's much less limited than 3DS, and more compact than formats like OBJ.
One thing I've always had trouble with is that the LWO2 loader doesn't support a
transparency texture image. You can put transparency into the alpha channel of the diffuse
color texture image, but this is a non-standard way of doing things and my LWO writer
doesn't support this quirk. Obviously OGL is more restrictive with image-based
transparency than LW is, but I'd love to be able to make the LWO plugin automatically copy
the transparency image over to the alpha channel of the diffuse color texture if they are
the same size and mapping mode.
I'm not in a situation where my development tasking allows me to hack on OSG right now,
but if you're taking requests for improvement to the LWO loader, I figured I'd register my
request.
