The mailing list archives are one of the best sources, second up any
of the examples that have a setRenderBinDetails in them.
I have to add that the rendering backend is one of the most
complicated parts of the OSG, its very powerful, but not straight
forward. For the most part users of the OSG won't need to worry about
what happens in the back-end. In you case - looking at optimizing
ParticleSystems, you are almost certainly looking into the wrong area
for optimizations, state sorting certainly won't help.
Learning about how backend is put together and how to control isn't a
bad thing to learn about though, but be prepared to spend some time on
it. Perhaps leave this for a rainy day unless you absolutely need to.
