Why do you have the bit depth at only 16bpp on a GeForce 7900, when it can easily do 24-32bit? In fact, I'd be willing to bet that the 32bpp would actually render faster than the 16bpp setting - at least, that's what I've experienced in the past with an nvidia card on Windows.
How about posting a copy of xorg.conf as well - my guess is that you
just need to add the following (or similar) to the "Screen" section at
the bottom:
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
