I have tried to run Compiz and Beryl and OSG worked just fine with Nvidia 
drivers. I didn't benchmark too much, but the performance was similar. With 
ATI there are issues, but that is more likely due to the buggy drivers.

Regarding functionality there could be issues with some extensions if you are 
using the Xgl proxy X server. That one is based on Mesa and is exposing only 
standard APIs, thus no Nvidia/ATI proprietary extensions. If you are running 
directly using AIGLX with Nvidia drivers there should be no problem. Anyhow, 
unlike with Vista, you can always run your application *without* the 3D 
window manager.
