For graphics (HUDs) I render directly to textures. I had idea of using Cairo, but haven't got time to investigate it.

Nothing that I know about. Marco was working on osgWidgets for quite some time ago, but I guess it has stalled? Marco? Other than that I could recommend CEGui, which is rendered using OpenGL. We are using it together with a custom drawable that renders the CEGUI widgets.
