That may be... but then they could be something different.

Binary Space Partitioning refers to breaking the geometry down into isolated convex spaces by continually splitting the spaces that are left... generally along existing surfaces (why would you not, after all?). I suppose one might call the splits "binary separating planes" but the tree has always been a "binary space partitioning" tree. The tree is partitioning space, after all.

At least as far back as Doom engine hacking... which would have been back in 1994 or so. And Foley and van Dam's Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice for that matter which is the graphics bible and much older.

When they were first introduced back in MultiGen as Binary Separating Planes

and are still called Binary Separating Planes in Multigen-Creator :) and
Files loaders that support them
