Thanks to everyone who replied, Neil - thanks for explicitly bringing up the Semantic Versioning paper - it's the anticipation that adhering to that system will bring a great deal of benefit to me is the main reason I want to sort out an automated solution. Thanks also for your invitation to discuss bndtools at some point. I'd like to do that - I'll first go over bndtools in more detail again so that I'm informed and then I'll reach out to you sometime to talk.
Peter - thanks for the detail about how bnd calculates imports, and for your perspective on automation. I also greatly appreciate that you've designed bnd to be agnostic to build tools - which is exactly the right thing to do. That fact that the maven bnd plugin works so well is testament to that. It seems we all agree there needs to be automation of package version checking - but there isn't a complete picture of how it all goes together at this stage. I have in my own head some ideas about the kind of process I'd like, I'm hoping that by exploring bndtools again and by talking to Neil I'll be able to frame those ideas against the current systems. It's certainly frustrating, as it must be for all of us who believe in the value in the OSGI model, that there isn't more funding available to develop the tools and processes of OSGI development. I personally think that the tooling is really all that's standing in the way of more adoption, I look forward to future progress in this area.
