a kind of prototype that would be subsumed by DS. Do I have this

Yes, you have it backwards. DS was inspired by the Service Binder. iPOJO is an evolution that uses byte code manipulation and inspection to greatly simplify the programming model allowing true POJO components with deferred service object creation, along with other interesting features like dynamic service properties. Also, it is more extensible, allowing it to deal with other issues too, like remoting and other non-functional things.
