China okays anti-terror pact with Tajikistan
BEIJING (AFP) - China's legislature has approved an agreement on fighting
terrorism, separatism and extremism with Tajikistan, the fourth such pact
with neighbours in Central Asia, state media said Thursday.

China has already inked deals on "the three vices" with Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, the Xinhua news agency reported.

"It is a pressing task of the Chinese government to cooperate with Central
Asian countries against 'the three vices' so as to safeguard national
security," Vice Foreign Minister Zhou Wenzhong was cited as saying.

According to the agreements, China and the four countries will take extra
measures to beef up cooperation against terrorism, separatism and extremism.
They include the hearing of relevant cases, joint criminal detection,
regular meetings and the setting up of information exchange systems and
technical cooperation among police forces.

China, Russia and the four Central Asian republics signed the Shanghai
Convention on Combating Terrorism, Separatism and Extremism in 2001 and the
additional bilateral agreements are intended to further boost cooperation,
Xinhua said.

Beijing is keen to win cooperation from its neighbours in its fight against
Muslim Uighur separatists, whom it has branded "terrorists" since the
September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
