Mystery buyer snatches Yukos _http://64.236.16.116/2004/BUSINESS/12/19/russia.yukos/index.html_ (http://64.236.16.116/2004/BUSINESS/12/19/russia.yukos/index.html) Sunday, December 19, 2004 Posted: 12:55 PM EST (1755 GMT)
MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- A little known company has bought the main production asset of embattled Russian oil company Yukos, paying 260.75 billion rubles, or $9.35 billion, at auction. Gazprom was expected to win at auction, but Baikalfinansgroup stunned watchers when it won. Yukos was once Russia's largest oil producer, pumping about 20 percent of the country's estimated 9 million barrels per day, but has slipped to number two behind Lukoil. Yukos faces more than $18 billion in tax claims from the Russian government, of which it has paid off approximately $4 billion. Former CEO Mikhail Khodorkovsky, a critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, remains in jail as he undergoes a trial on charges of fraud and tax evasion. Khodorkovsky funded opposition political parties and expressed a desire to run for office some day. Putin has said the case is part of a crackdown on corruption, and he denies political motivation. Yukos has launched bankruptcy proceedings under U.S. law in a Houston, Texas court. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------ Yahoo!
