Car bomb targets Kosovar Serb leader

ISN SECURITY WATCH (09/02/05) - The vehicle of moderate Kosovar Serb
leader Oliver Ivanovic was destroyed in a car bombing late on Tuesday
in the UN-administered province of Kosovo.

According to local media reports citing UN police, no one was hurt in
the explosion targeting Ivanovic's car, which was parked outside his
home in northern Kosovo's ethnically divided city of Mitrovica.
Ivanovic is seen as one of the more moderate political leaders among
the Serb minority representatives in majority-Albanian Kosovo.
Ivanovic is member of Kosovo Assembly, and has been accused by Kosovar
Serb and Belgrade hardliners of being a traitor to his own people. The
international community views him as a moderate politician who is
willing to cooperate in reconciliation efforts. Kosovo Serb hardliners
incited by Serbia Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, advocated a
complete boycott of last October's general elections in Kosovo.

Only around 1 per cent of the Kosovar Serb population voted for the
new Kosovo Assembly. Ivanovic openly defied the Serbian government in
Belgrade by taking part in elections to Kosovo's Albanian-dominated
parliament. Newly elected Kosovar Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj
condemned the explosion. "The Kosovo Prime Minister strongly condemns
this criminal act and violence against a Member of the Kosovo
Assembly, Oliver Ivanovic. Such acts are unacceptable," he said in a
statement. The car bombing comes as the UN is planning to launch
internationally mediated talks between Kosovar and Serbian authorities
on the province's future political status.

The chief of the UN mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), Soren Jessen Petersen,
said on Monday that talks could begin later this year, provided that
the international community positively assessed Kosovar authorities'
progress at meeting a set of standards that include the protection of
human rights for minorities and ensuring general security in the
province. Albanians, representing 90 per cent of the population, are
demanding independence and a definitive separation from Serbia, but
authorities in Belgrade say independence is not an option. (By Ekrem
