http://www.wpherald.com/storyview.php?StoryID=20050208-125953-9409r Blair sends warning to Iran and Syria By UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL Published February 8, 2005 LONDON -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair warned Iran and Syria Tuesday not to attempt to weaken U.S. troops in Iraq in hope of reducing chances for an attack. That would be a "very serious miscalculation," Blair told a parliamentary committee. He backed President George Bush's assertion during his State of the Union address that Iran is "the world's primary state sponsor of terror." "It certainly does sponsor terrorism. There is no doubt about that at all," he said. "I hope very much that if we can make progress in the Middle East that Iran realizes it has an obligation to help that, not hinder it." Concerning the possibility of military action against Iran -- which Washington has refused to rule out -- Blair was asked whether he would be believed if he told Parliament such action was needed because Tehran had weapons of mass destruction. He replied: "I'm not saying that and, secondly, it depends what the evidence base is." However, he expressed optimism a diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear activity could be reached. ------------------------ Yahoo!
