US protests against Russia plans to sell arms to Venezuela WASHINGTON, February 11 (Itar-Tass) - The Washington Times newspaper wrote in its Thursday’s issue that the United States has declared a formal protest against Russia’s plans to sell a large batch of AK-74 (Kalashnikov) submachine guns. The newspaper referred to unidentified U.S. administration officials to provide arguments in favour of authenticity of the information. The protest was filed with the Russian Embassy in the United States in December last year, the newspaper claims. However, the Bush administration has decided to leak the information to the press only now. According to the U.S. administration officials, they have not once notified the Russian Foreign Ministry and Defence Ministry of their concern over the planned sale. U.S. officials say the demarche is caused by Washington’s concern over the fact that the small arms purchased by the Hugo Chavez government could in the end get into the hands of left extremist military groups in Latin America. According to the Washington Times, Caracas is planning to purchase over 100 AK-74s of Russian make. The Venezuelan plans to purchase in large quantities of various types of weapons are causing big concern, the newspaper cited a statement made by the U.S. Department of State. The U.S. administration believes that Venezuela should consult its neighbours on such arms purchases, the newspaper wrote. The U.S. Department of State says the plans of Venezuela’s purchase of Russian submachine guns have raised questions about the end objective pursued by the Hugo Chavez government. The patience Venezuela displays to such groups as Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the National Liberation Army (ELN) has increased the U.S. concern further, it is stressed in the statement, according to the Washington Times. -- And, Lord, we're especially thankful for nuclear power, the cleanest, safest energy source there is, except for solar, which is just a pipe dream. -- Homer Simpson ------------------------ Yahoo!
