Russia trains 1,000 Iranians as nuclear technicians to operate Bushehr plant MOSCOW Russia has accelerated an effort to train more than 1,000 Iranian technicians to operate the Bushehr nuclear reactor in Iran in 2006. Officials said Russian institutes have been training Iranians to operate Bushehr in time for the opening of the facility, expected late next year. They said the training is part of the $1 billion Bushehr project, which has so far been three years behind schedule. The training program is sponsored by the Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency. The Novovoronezh center of the Russian Rosenergoatom Atomic Energy Concern has trained 650 Iranian technicians to operate Bushehr. The technicians received classroom instruction before moving on to help operate a Russian nuclear facility. The Iranian Atomic Energy Agency has overseen the Russian program. An Iranian official told the Moscow-based Itar-Tass news agency on March 2 that 700 Iranian engineers would be trained in the Novovoronezh center before the end of 2005. The official said the engineers and technicians would be taught practical skills in Novovoronezh. From there, he said, the Iranians would be given experience in operating a 1,000-megawatt light-water reactor similar to Bushehr. "The training takes from three months to one year," the official said. "Iranian engineers feel at home. Local residents are rather friendly." The Russian training would be extended for Iranian personnel assigned to future nuclear reactor projects, officials said. Iran has examined a Russian offer to build another six 1,000-megawatt nuclear reactors. ------------------------ Yahoo!
