Bahrain sees Iran's hand behind Shi'ite unrest, calls ambassador on
the carpet

ABU DHABI Bahrain has reason to believe that Iran is behind
anti-regime activities in the kingdom.

Arab diplomatic sources said Bahrain's intelligence services have
obtained evidence that Iranian operatives were directing some of the
Shi'ite unrest in the Gulf Cooperation Council state. The sources said
Bahrain has warned Iran to immediately end this activity or face a
crisis in relations.

Bahraini authorities were alarmed by the Ashura march of Shi'ites in
Manama, in which participants displayed huge posters of Iranian
supreme leader Ali Khamenei and Hizbullah secretary-general Hassan
Nasrallah. The sources said a Bahraini investigation determined that
the Shi'ites were ordered by Iranian regime elements to march with the
posters in support of Teheran.

"For Bahrain, this was the breaking point," an Arab diplomat said.
"This was a gross interference in Bahrain's affairs of the kind not
seen in a decade."

Over the past week, the Foreign Ministry has summoned its ambassador
home from Teheran. The ministry also demanded an explanation of the
Khamenei posters from Iran's ambassador to Manama.

The sources said the display of the portraits at the Ashura
celebrations confirmed the warnings of Bahrain's Interior Ministry and
intelligence services of an increasing infiltration by Iran of the
kingdom's Shi'ite community. Bahrain has a Shi'ite majority, with many
of its leaders believed to be in contact with Iranian intelligence.

Bahraini authorities arrested suspected pro-Iranian activists,
including those in the civil rights community. In February, three
Bahrainis were arrested in connection with operating an
anti-government website, www.bahrainonline.org. The site has reported
on anti-government demonstrations in the kingdom.
