Bomb in Loveland 'very dangerous'
Shrapnel-laden device would have exploded eventually By Brian D. Crecente, Rocky Mountain News March 29, 2005 Loveland police continue their investigation into a shrapnel-laden bomb equipped with a chemical timer that was discovered near a bike path over the weekend. Police described the pear-shaped device, which was wrapped in duct tape and hidden in a bag of Doritos, as "very dangerous." A man walking along a bike trail near Centennial Park on the west side of the city found the device about 12:45 p.m. Saturday police said. Police cordoned off the area and called in the bomb team, which used a water-cannon equipped remote robot to destroy the device. Investigators examining the bomb discovered that the device was packed with metal shrapnel and explosive materials. Police also discovered that the device used some sort of chemical delay fuse, which would have eventually eaten through the outer container and set off the bomb. Police are investigating whether the device could be connected to a much less sophisticated incendiary device that was reported to police about 1 p.m. Sunday, said Larimer County Sheriff's spokeswoman Eloise Campanella. "It was an aerosol can with a firework-type thing that had a fuse taped to the bottom," she said. "If the fuse was lit, I don't know what would happen." Although Campanella said that it was "odd" that there were two devices found in the Loveland area about the same time, the two discoveries may not be connected. The second device was actually found a week to two weeks ago by a family living on Red Bird Place near Boedecker Lake in south Loveland. The family didn't report it until seeing news reports about the discovery of the more sophisticated bomb. Anyone with information about the second device should call the Larimer County Sheriff's Office at 970-416-1985. Anyone with information about the more sophisticated device should call Loveland Police Det. Bob Weesner, 970-962-2248.
