Wolfowitz defies critics in role at World Bank

(Filed: 01/04/2005)

The American nominee to lead the World Bank says he will be true to
its core aim of transforming the lives of the poor despite critics
claiming he is just a tool of the US administration.

As the bank's 24 executive directors met to appoint Paul Wolfowitz as
successor to James Wolfensohn, the US deputy defence secretary was
criticised as having scant experience of development issues.
Critics also queried the purpose of the World Bank, which was created
in 1944 along with the International Monetary Fund.

After confirmation by the directors, Mr Wolfowitz will head an
organisation with nearly 10,000 staff that last year extended $20
billion in funding for development projects around the globe.
Sebastian Mallaby, the author, said Mr Wolfowitz faced a daunting
challenge in ensuring the bank's relevance.

Writing for the journal Foreign Affairs, Mallaby said: "An incoming
president will soon confront a nearly impossible challenge: saving the
bank from the same caste of statesmen, high-level commissions and
civil-society activists."

For his supporters, Mr Wolfowitz is just the man for that job. Who
better to reform a valuable but bloated organisation than an arch
"neo-conservative" with the ear of President George W Bush, they ask.
