Who's hot, who's not in Syria The last few weeks have been most difficult for Syrian President Bashar Assad. He has reshuffled his senior aides faster than a Vegas blackjack dealer in an attempt to prevent a coup encouraged by the United States. The following is a list of who's on Assad's list of favorites: Maher Assad. Assad's younger brother is willing to do anything to save the regime. A colonel in the Republican Guard, he has replicated the brutal methods of his exiled uncle, Rifat, in confronting and even provoking Bashar's rivals. Assaf Chawkat. Bashar's brother-in-law is the leading operative in preserving the regime. He runs Syrian military intelligence and maintains a low profile. But Assad doesn't move without him. Rami Makhlouf. Makhlouf is Assad's cousin and a new player on the scene. His role is in business and enriching the Assad family. Makhlouf has been putting together major deals in telecommunications with foreign companies. Col. Mustafa Hamdan. He is head of Syrian intelligence in Lebanon. Hamdan has been ordering attacks on Lebanese opposition elements and their families in an attempt to intimidate them before the parliamentary elections in May. Hamdan controls the so-called "Murabitun Organization" of Sunni Muslims, prepared to assassinate and bomb targets, particularly in Christian East Beirut. Foreign Minister Farouk A-Shaara. A-Shaara has lowered his profile amid the failure to stop the UN Security Council resolution regarding the Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon. Assad blames A-Shaara for failing to warn of the debacle. Still, A-Shaara continues to wield influence on policy. ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor --------------------~--> DonorsChoose.
