Al Qaida could repeat major suicide strikes Al Qaida has the capability of carrying out major suicide strikes in both Europe and North Africa. A report by Morocco's intelligence service said Al Qaida has continued to grow in North Africa, including in the kingdom. The report warned that Al Qaida and its aligned groups are capable of repeating its massive strikes in 2003 and 2004. The 110-page report by Morocco's Territorial Surveillance Directorate said Al Qaida could strike in either Madrid, as in March 2004, or in Casablanca, as in 2003. The report said Al Qaida's strength has not significantly diminished over the last year and the Islamic insurgency continues to plague Morocco and other countries in the region. "Terrorists maintain close relationships with Islamic movements are easily capable of infiltrating any place and can carry out attacks at any time," the report said. Al Qaida and its allies have used criminal activities to finance their operations. Indeed, the March 11, 2004 bombings in Madrid were financed from drug trafficking. "The savage and bloody acts [of March 11] were financed by drug trafficking endorsed by an Islamic ruling from within the terrorist organization responsible for the attacks," the report stated. "It provided religious legality to the use of criminal acts, such as drug trafficking, to finance the perpetration of any action aimed at destroying the infidel enemy." Al Qaida has tried to attack such targets as embassies, hotels and fast-food restaurants, churches and synagogues in Morocco. Nevertheless, 2,000 suspected Islamic operatives have been arrested, dismantling the most important insurgency networks in the kingdom. ------------------------ Yahoo!
