 World Bank praises Oman�s economic policy


MUSCAT � Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki, minister of national economy and
deputy chairman of the financial affairs and energy resources council,
received at his office yesterday the vice-president of the World Bank
for the Middle East and North Africa region, and his accompanying
delegation who are on a visit to the Sultanate.
They discussed bilateral cooperation.

Macki briefed the guest on government�s efforts to diversify income
resources and enhance the economy as well as the financial and economic
programmes and policies adopted to improve financial performance. He
also expressed thanks for the World Bank technical consultancies and
contribution to development issues in the Sultanate.
The guest praised Oman�s sound economic policy, citing it as one of the
excellent policies in the region as it focused on diversifying resources
of national income to strengthen the country�s financial and economic
position and achieve comprehensive development.

He also reviewed the joint programmes and technical consultancies
offered by the bank in cooperation with the health, national economy and
manpower ministries and the Muscat Securities Market (MSM). He said the
World Bank is ready to provide the Sultanate with any technical
consultancy required in any field. The meeting was attended by Darweesh
bin Ismaeil Al Balushi, financial affairs undersecretary at the Finance
Ministry, and the delegation accompanying the guest.

l Maqbool bin Ali Sultan, commerce and industry minister, received in
his office yesterday Christian Portman and his accompanying delegation.
The meeting discussed ways of enhancing bilateral cooperation and the
possibility to benefit from the services and projects implemented by the
bank. The meeting also reviewed the assessment relating to economic
strategies of countries which is currently being implemented by the bank
and assistance offered to these countries which include developing laws
and regulations and assisting them in some clauses relating to the World
Trade Organisation�s agreement. The two sides also discussed topics
relating to the development of small and medium enterprises and how to
diversify the national income of countries. The meeting was attended by
the ministry and MSM officials.

Dr Rajiha bint Abdulameer bin Ali, minister of tourism, received in her
office yesterday Christian Portman and his accompanying delegation. They
reviewed the joint cooperation between the Sultanate and the World Bank
and ways through which the World Bank could contribute in serving the
development issues being witnessed by the Sultanate in general and Omani
tourism in particular. The meeting was attended by Mohsin bin Khamis Al
Balushi, undersecretary at the Ministry of Tourism.

Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Sarmi, undersecretary at the Higher
Education Ministry, also received here yesterday the World Bank
delegation. During the meeting, education progress in the Sultanate and
education strategy and its development objectives were reviewed. Dr Said
Al Rabie, director-general of private universities and colleges, talked
about the ministry�s role in providing the appropriate atmosphere for
their study at various colleges and universities and its attention to
develop the curricula to keep abreast with the various technical and
scientific changes in the world. They also discussed ways and mechanisms
of cooperation between the World Bank and the Sultanate in various
spheres relevant to higher education for the sake of its improvement. �
