Afghan internet caf bombing kills three

ISN SECURITY WATCH (09/05/05) - Three people died and six were injured
in a suicide attack on an internet caf in the Afghan capital Kabul on
Saturday evening.

The Park Net Caf, which was destroyed in the explosion, was located
in the center of town and was popular with foreigners. One of the
three people killed was a Filipino man, while the other victims were
Afghans, including the suspected suicide bomber, a spokesman for the
peacekeepers of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)
told reporters.

Initially, Afghan officials had said there was some doubt about
whether the attack was a suicide bombing or the result of a homemade
bomb planted on the site. But Interior Ministry spokesman Lutfullah
Mashal later said authorities strongly believed it was a suicide
attack, as indicated by the severe chest injuries sustained by one
dead man, possibly the bomber.
The owner of the caf as well as a manager and a security guard were
detained for questioning.

If the attack was indeed carried out by a suicide bomber, it would be
the first suicide attack in Kabul since 23 October last year, when an
Afghan man killed a US woman and an Afghan girl in a busy shopping
area - only a few hundred meters from the internet caf targeted on
Saturday.

In late April, a car bomb exploded in a Kabul area frequented by many
international offices and the site of up-scale restaurants. There were
no casualties in that incident, for which the Taliban claimed
responsibility.

Also in late April, a Taliban spokesman warned that the group would
focus on suicide attacks in the future, targeting international
troops, aid workers, and foreigners to achieve maximum results with
minimum casualties for themselves.
Observers expect attacks to increase in the run-up to the
parliamentary elections scheduled for 18 September.
