London probe focuses on sleeper cell networks British security and intelligence services are engaged in an all-out investigation into the bombings last week that are now believed to be the work of Al Qaida cells in Britain. Although the bombers have been tentatively identified, the real question is the force that prompted them into action. The working theory of investigators is that a resident sleeper cell conducted the attack on three trains and a bus. The Arabic newspaper Al-Sharq al-Awsat, quoting Islamist sources, said the bombings were the work of Al Qaida members in Europe. The triggering for the attack was the announcement that London would host the 2012 Olympic games, the sources said. Al Qaida has large numbers of cells placed clandestinely in Europe for such operations. Senior Al Qaida leaders supervised the planting of the cells, including units now in the United States. No. 2 leader Ayman al Zawahiri supervised the U.S. cells during a secret visit to the United States in 1995. He toured some 10 states at the time. U.S. sources said Al Qaida would not publicly take responsibility for the London blasts and that preparations for the attack were made three months in advance. Britain is expected to begin a major crackdown on its large Muslim community and may deport large numbers of Islamists. The cells in Britain and Europe remain closely guarded and are not known to most Islamist sympathizers. -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
