Prosecutors seek DNA of pair targeted in federal terror probe JEREMIAH MARQUEZ Associated Press LOS ANGELES - Prosecutors are seeking DNA samples from two men targeted by a federal investigation into a possible terrorist plot. Levar Haney Washington, 25, and Gregory Vernon Patterson, 21, were scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing Tuesday in connection with a string of gas station robberies in southern Los Angeles County. The two have pleaded not guilty. Counterterrorism officials began investigating them after police who searched Washington's apartment said they found a target list containing the names of three National Guard facilities, the Israeli Consulate and several synagogues in the Los Angeles area. Authorities suspect attacks against those buildings were to be carried out on Sept. 11, the Jewish High Holidays or other dates. They have warned the consulate and guard of a possible threat. Washington and Patterson have not been charged in the terrorism probe and defense attorneys say they have not seen any evidence connecting to them to other alleged crimes. Prosecutors planned to ask the judge at Tuesday's preliminary hearing that they be allowed to connect DNA evidence from the pair. Earlier this month, the terrorism investigation led to the arrest of Hammad Riaz Samana, who is being held in a federal detention center in Los Angeles. Federal officials have refused to say what charges he might face. Samana, a 21-year old student originally from Pakistan, attended the same Inglewood mosque as Washington and Patterson. A source familiar with the investigation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said police tailing Washington and Patterson in the weeks before their arrests also saw a car registered to Samana following a vehicle the two were riding in. Local authorities put the pair under surveillance after finding a cell phone registered to Patterson after one of the gas station holdups. Federal and local officials are also examining possible ties between Samana and a militant Islamic prison gang that authorities say might have helped organized the plot. The group - Jamiyyat Ul Islam Is Saheeh, or JIS - has members at California State Prison, Sacramento, where Washington served three years for a robbery conviction.
